Have you ever tried taking your fishing daydream a little deeper… Literally? Deep-sea fishing is done in waters at least 100 feet deep. Some call it sport or trophy fishing because you’re going after some of the ocean’s most exciting, powerful, and beautiful catches!
Sometimes, you’ll be close to shore. Other times, you’ll be cruising dozens (or even hundreds) of miles from land. Either way, there’s no better place to drop that line than Hilton Head Island.
Why Go Deep-Sea Fishing in Hilton Head?
Whether you want a half-day trip, a nighttime adventure, or a multi-day excursion, you can explore the deep sea through fishing in Hilton Head. Here are three reasons the island is every angler’s spot:
- Access to the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Stream. Hilton Head is your front-row seat to the mighty Atlantic, and just offshore flows the Gulf Stream. Imagine what’s beneath those deep blue waters!
- Near-Perfect Weather Year-Round. May is the sunniest month with around 280 hours of sunshine, and even November, the “least sunny,” boasts about 181 hours. That adds up to nearly 2,800 hours of sunshine every year! It’s almost always a good day to go fishing.
- Many Charter Services Available. Having plenty of charter options means you can choose the trip that fits your vibe. Short and sweet, long and epic, or something in between? Sure! Charter captains in Hilton Head are also locals who know the seas like the back of their hand.
What You Can Expect To Catch
What are the most popular deep-sea fishing targets on the island? Here are five of them.
Triggerfish
Triggerfish are feisty, tiny bottom-dwellers. You’ll find them 30 to 50 miles offshore, near reefs, wrecks, and Navy Towers. They’ve got armored bodies and sharp teeth, so don’t underestimate them.
To catch Triggerfish, bottom fish with shrimp or squid. They’re most active from late fall to early spring. Weighing in at about two to five pounds, they pack a punch and make for a fantastic meal.
Mahi Mahi
Mahi Mahi are the ultimate crowd-pleasers. With their electric colors, acrobatic leaps, and playful fight, they’re as breathtaking as fun to capture! They hang around floating debris or structures up to 80 miles offshore, chasing schools of smaller fish.
Trolling at a brisk pace works like a charm for Mahi Mahi. They’re most active in summer and fall and can reach up to 40 pounds. They’re absolutely delicious, too.
Wahoo
Wahoo are speed demons. These sleek, silvery fish can hit speeds of up to 60 mph! They thrive in deep water, usually around the continental shelf’s drop-offs. If you’re lucky enough to hook one, you’d better be prepared for a wild ride.
The key to catching Wahoo is fast trolling. Mimic the frantic chase they love by using diving plugs or live bait, and when they strike, brace yourself. They weigh between 30 and 60 pounds.
Sailfish
Sailfish are rare in Hilton Head, but summer might just surprise you with an encounter. These majestic fish have iconic sails and lightning-fast speed, leaping, diving, and fighting like seasoned performers, even if they weigh between 100 and 150 pounds.
When they hit, it’s pure theater. Anglers often troll with live bait like mullet or ballyhoo or try kite fishing.
Blackfin Tuna
Blackfin Tuna are the superstars because they’re fast, fierce, and absolutely thrilling to catch. They rule the waters 40 to 70 miles offshore, where the Gulf Stream’s currents keep them on the move.
Blackfin love hanging out in schools near underwater structures like wrecks and drop-offs. Trolling with live bait like mullet or ballyhoo is your best bet to hook one. While they typically weigh between 10 and 30 pounds, bigger catches are possible. Earn that victory photo!
