Hilton Head Regulations for a Beach Day Done Right

Hilton Head Regulations for a Beach Day Done Right

Are you coming to Hilton Head for the beaches? Totally understandable! The island has miles of soft sands, calming waves, and postcard-worthy sunsets. But of course, you’re not the only one looking forward to a beach day. Every year, millions of visitors flock to the area. So, it’s only fair that there are regulations. Let’s dive into these regulations before you set up your umbrellas.

Beach Non-Negotiables “Fun” can look different for everybody, but there are things you’re not allowed to bring or do.

What Can’t You Bring?

● Alcohol, beer, or wine

● Glass containers or glassware

● Shovels (unless they’re made of wood or plastic and are less than 30 inches long and six inches wide)

● Unauthorized motor vehicles like ATVs

● Fires and fireworks

● Stunt kites or wind-powered vehicles (between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM from April to September)

What Can’t You Do?

● Dig holes

● Litter

● Leave personal belongings overnight

● Fish for sharks

● Harm or remove any live beach creatures

● Damage dunes, sea oats, or other protected plants

● Operate motorized watercraft

● Commercial activity without a permit

● Wear lifeguard gear (if you’re not actually a lifeguard)

● Sleep on the beach from midnight to 6:00 AM

● Nudity

● Store boats without permission

Designated Swim Areas During the official beach season on Hilton Head, you’ll find lifeguards in designated swim zones. Before you hit the waters, ask them about the flag they’re flying. If it’s yellow, there’s a medium hazard; it’s best to stay shallow. Red means to expect strong currents or rough surf. If it’s purple, marine challengers (think jellyfish) are present.

Furry Pals on the Beach Hilton Head loves your furry friends, but there are a few rules to maintain safety.

Parking Before Swimming Let’s talk about the very un-glamorous but necessary topic of parking.

All vehicles must be in designated parking spaces, or they’ll be towed. Residents with parking permits can park for free at all town beach parks, but visitors must pay (except at Coligny Beach Park).

Weekday parking will cost $3 per hour, capped at $15 daily. On weekends, it’s a flat rate of $20 per day.

“What if I don’t pay?” Well, you’ll get citations ranging from $50 to $500…
