Everyone who visits Hilton Head gets to soak up the sunshine, saunter along the beaches, and take in the lush greenery. Sadly, not everyone gets to experience the island the way the locals do. If it’s not the ocean or the golf courses, what else makes your vacation in Hilton Head complete? Two words: farmers’ markets. These unique markets are where the island truly comes to life, blending fresh flavors, handmade crafts, and a laid-back coastal vibe! Across Hilton Head, you’ll find several farmers’ markets offering unique mixes of locally grown produce, artisan goods, and friendly faces. But if there’s one market you shouldn’t miss at all costs, it’s the Farmers and Makers Market at the Shops at Sea Pines Center. Locals and tourists deem it the perfect place to shop, savor, and stroll your way through island life.Â
Seek Sea Pines First
Before we get into the details of the Farmers and Makers Market, let’s zoom out and take a look at Sea Pines, one of Hilton Head’s most iconic master-planned communities. Sea Pines is an experience in itself with roots dating back to the 1950s, welcoming you with moss-draped oaks lining peaceful bike trails and dolphins playing in the surf. Here, time always seems to slow down, especially when you go to the following spots.
Harbour Town Lighthouse
No trip to Hilton Head is memorable without a stop at the Harbour Town Lighthouse. This lighthouse stands tall in Sea Pines with its signature red-and-white stripes! Climb to the top (about 114 steps) for panoramic views of the marina and Calibogue Sound, then browse the museum for a glimpse into the island’s maritime history.
Sea Pines Forest Preserve
This 600-acre natural oasis is packed with scenic trails, winding boardwalks, and hidden lakes. Keep an eye out for animals basking in the sun, wildflowers in full bloom, and even a mysterious 4,000-year-old shell ring left behind by early island inhabitants! Whether you hike, bike, or take a guided horseback tour, the Sea Pines Forest Preserve is pure magic.
South Beach
Don’t miss the famous Salty Dog Café when you’re in Hilton Head. Find it and more at South Beach! This waterfront area looks like a coastal postcard, with colorful shops, breezy outdoor dining, and live music filling the air. It’ll be a mistake not to try and catch a sunset while sipping a frozen cocktail, even if you’re short on time.
What’s in the Shops at Sea Pines Center?
Now, let’s zoom in and explore the Shops at Sea Pines Center, where the Farmers and Makers Market takes place. This open-air shopping destination at 71 Lighthouse Road features locally owned boutiques, art galleries, specialty shops, and some of Hilton Head’s favorite dining spots. It’s the kind of spot where island charm meets an upscale, walkable shopping district. You’ll feel like you’re wandering through a quaint city square but with the salty breeze and easygoing aura of the Lowcountry.
Shopping
The Shops at Sea Pines Center defines retail therapy. At By Hand, Ink, for instance, there are shelves filled with beautifully bound books for the bookworms. If you have an eye for sparkle, go to Forsythe Jewelers, a staple on the island for 44 years. And if scents and home ambiance are more your speed, Sea Love‘s candle bar and boutique promise a sensory venture like no other.
Art lovers can get lost in the VIVID Gallery, founded by photographer Jeffrey Keefer. This gallery showcases stunning imagery from around the world, supporting a good cause with sales proceeds donated to various charities.
Dining
After a day of shopping, you’ll need to refuel. The Shops at Sea Pines Center serves up some of the island’s best bites, including Truffles Café, which gives you a taste of tradition as a neighborhood fave since 1983!
On the other hand, Lowcountry Produce has small-batch gourmet foods that have earned national recognition. For a laid-back meal that doesn’t skimp on quality, head to Chow Daddy’s. Think tacos, grain bowls, or a mouthwatering burger. Gluten-free options are available, too!
Services
For golf aficionados and those who appreciate giving back, the Heritage Classic Foundation is a name you’ll want to know. As the general sponsor of several major golf events, this organization brings world-class tournaments to Hilton Head and actively works to improve the lives of South Carolina citizens!
Anyone who wants to break a sweat can walk into the Sea Pines Resort Fitness Center. State-of-the-art fitness machines and a variety of exercise classes? You can keep up with your workout routine! And, of course, you deserve some self-care time at Le Spa. Get everything from hair and nail services to facials, body treatments, and even non-surgical cosmetic procedures.
Welcome to the 12th Farmers and Makers Market!
Have we lost the Farmers and Makers Market? Nope. We’re finally there. And trust us, it’s worth the wait.
Every Tuesday from March 11th through mid-November, the Shops at Sea Pines Center transforms from 10 AM to 2 PM into a hub of local goodness, where farmers, artisans, and makers bring their best to the table — literally. This market is in its 12th year!
But hold on. If the Shops at Sea Pines Center already has everything you could need, what’s the point of a farmers’ market? Well, think of it like this: it’s the Shops at Sea Pines Center — but smaller and more. Yes, you read that right.
Farmers’ markets are where community and creativity collide. You meet the people who grow your food, craft your jewelry, and blend your coffee beans. Pass by stands and have an impromptu chat with a beekeeper, a local artist, or a chef giving tips on the best way to cook that just-picked produce! It’s part shopping trip, part social hour, and entirely an experience.
The Farmers and Makers Market is a beloved Hilton Head tradition. The market is smaller than the Shops at Sea Pines Center (well, it’s in it) but has more variety, and it also has the things that we all need more of in our lives.
Fresh, Local Produce
Expect vibrant fruits, crisp vegetables, and farm-fresh herbs that taste like they were picked just for you — because they were. Straight from the farm to your basket! Depending on the season, you’ll snag juicy blueberries, ripe tomatoes, or fragrant basil. Plan a picnic, cook up a feast, or simply enjoy the fresh flavors of Hilton Head.
Food and Beverages
The Farmers and Makers Market will be a feast for your senses. Fresh-baked pastries, artisanal cheeses, and homemade jams? Sure thing. You can also have locally roasted coffee, a scoop of handcrafted gelato, or cold-pressed juice. Be ready to feel super full. You might want to take some home for later!
Handmade Items
If you love one-of-a-kind finds, you’re in the right place. The market is brimming with handcrafted jewelry, scented candles, hand-sewn textiles, and artisanal soaps that make perfect gifts (even if they’re just for yourself). You can ask the makers about their inspiration and techniques, too.
Artworks
Local artists showcase stunning paintings, photography, pottery, and sculptures that capture the spirit of the island. Again, feel free to chat up! You’ll be amazed by the stories and expertise behind each piece. Plus, you can take home an authentic Hilton Head keepsake.
Rentals
If you think you’ve already exhausted all the activities in Hilton Head, think again. Look forward to booths for bike, kayak, paddleboard, and other rentals you may have missed! There are locals ready to tell you more about living the island lifestyle.
Community
Above all, the Farmers and Makers Market provides a vital dose of community.
Sure, you’ll get fresh produce, handmade goods, and incredible local art — but what really makes this market special is the people. It’s the friendly conversations with farmers who remember your name, the artists who light up when you admire their work, and the sense of connection from sharing a smile with a stranger over a basket of fresh peaches.
This market is about belonging. It’s where everyone comes together, stories are swapped as easily as homemade jam, and every handshake and high-five reminds you why small-town allure is still unbeatable.
Tips for the Best Farmers and Makers Market Experience
Now you can’t wait to be in Hilton Head, make a beeline for Sea Pines, and dive straight into the Farmers and Makers Market at the Shops at Sea Pines Center. We totally get it! But even the most relaxing activity warrants a little preparation. Trust us; a few insider tips will take your market day from good to absolutely legendary.
- Get There Early (or Not — It’s Your Call!): Want the crème de la crème of farm-fresh goodies? Arrive early. The good things disappear fast, and the morning crowd is a little calmer. But if you’re all about those last-minute deals, swing by closer to closing time. Some vendors may offer discounts to lighten their load before heading home. Either way, you win!
- Carry a Tote Bag (or Three): You might come for one thing, but you’ll leave with way more. That’s just how farmers’ markets work. A sturdy tote bag is a must for your finds. Bonus points if it’s reusable because the planet will thank you.
- Cash Is King, But Cards Are Handy: Many vendors take credit cards, but some still prefer good old-fashioned cash. Slip some small bills in your pocket, just in case. You don’t want to miss out on the perfect handmade candle just because you forgot to hit the ATM.
- Sample Everything: There are plenty of samples to go around. And let’s be honest; trying before you buy makes shopping more fun. Those behind the booths love what they do and are always happy to tell you about it. Ask questions or say what you like about their products!
- Dress for the Weather: It’s Hilton Head, so the sun is usually shining, but that Lowcountry humidity can sneak up on you. Lightweight, breathable clothing is key, and don’t forget sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen. Oh, and comfy shoes!
- Stay for Lunch (or a Sweet Treat!): Shopping works up an appetite; luckily, the market serves mouthwatering goodies. Whether you go for a sit-down meal, a grab-and-go bite, or just an ice-cold lemonade to sip while you wander, you’re in for a treat.
- Make a Day of It: Why rush? After the market, take some time to explore Sea Pines! Go see the Harbour Town Lighthouse or get lost in the Sea Pines Forest Preserve. And, if you’re not ready to end your day just yet, head over to the beach for a sunset picnic. The possibilities are endless!
- Bring Your Market Buddies: Shopping solo is great, but markets are even more fun with friends. Take your crew with you, make a game plan (or just wander — both work), and turn the day into a mini adventure.
Here’s a warning: one trip may not be enough. Again, the Farmers and Makers Market runs every Tuesday from March through mid-November, and each week features new vendors and items. If your vacay lasts longer than a week, stop by one more time! And if not, you can always plan another trip. Hilton Head will be here waiting for your return.
