The History of St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day rolls around every March 17 as a celebration of St. Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint. It started as a religious holiday and turned into a worldwide reason to salute all things Irish.

But did you know that St. Patrick wasn’t even Irish? Nope! He was born in Roman Britain sometime back in the fifth century.

As a teenager, he was kidnapped by Irish pirates and taken to Ireland, where he spent years tending animals and picking up the Irish language. Eventually, he escaped, trained as a priest, and decided to return to Ireland to share Christianity.

One of the legends says he used a little three-leaf shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. That’s why the shamrock became one of the biggest icons of the festivity.

St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland

How does St. Patrick’s Day go down in Ireland itself?

The big party is in Dublin. They host a three-day festival with a parade that draws over half a million people every year. Cork has its famous “An Céilí Mór,” too. Cities like Galway, Limerick, Kilkenny, and Dingle all bring their own flavor to the extravaganza.

There are often live performances featuring fiddles, tin whistles, harps, and bodhráns. Step dancing, céilí dancing, and sean-nós dancing require serious leg muscles, but the Irish don’t mind!

St. Patrick’s Day is all about food as well. While Americans often associate it with corned beef and cabbage, you’ll find hearty dishes like Irish stew, soda bread, colcannon, and coddle in Ireland.

Parties would be incomplete without a pint of Guinness, a cider, or a splash of Irish whiskey. There’s even a tradition called “drowning the shamrock,” where you drop a shamrock into your last glass of whiskey and drink it as a toast.

Remember, it’s considered bad luck to skip wearing green on this day. Leprechauns will pinch you!

St. Patrick’s Day in the United States

When Irish immigrants came to the United States, they brought St. Patrick’s Day with them, and the Americans kind of went all out. Cities with Irish communities leaned hard into it! Boston kicked things off with its first parade in 1737. New York followed in 1762. Chicago even went bold in 1962 and started dyeing the river green! (Even the beer gets dyed green…)

Hilton Head Ireland St. Patrick’s Day Parade

In Hilton Head, the most unmissable event is Hilton Head Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. It began back in 1983 when business legend Tom Reilley and a small group of friends and family decided the island needed its own St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Now, it’s one of the most loved local traditions, and actually the oldest parade in all of South Carolina!

Every spring, around 25,000 spectators gather along Pope Avenue to witness a colorful array of floats, marching groups from local businesses and charities, high school and university bands, pipe and drum performers, the U.S. Marine Corps Band from Parris Island, and many more.

Over the years, the parade has featured everything from the Budweiser Clydesdales to military jet flyovers to the Nutmobile, the Wienermobile, and Nashville recording star Michelle Murray. In 2002, it was named one of the Top 20 Tourism Events in the Southeast.

St. Patrick’s Day 2026 is a grand occasion, as it marks the 40th anniversary of the parade. You’re invited! On March 15, the parade commences at 2:00 PM at Coligny Beach Parking Area, then heads to Pope Avenue. From there, it turns onto Office Park Drive and wraps up at the Courtyard Building.

It’s an organized slice of Hilton Head culture you’ll want to be part of. After last year’s parade was canceled because of severe weather, the excitement level this year is basically doubled. We hope you’re ready for it!
