Have you ever caught sight of a wild animal in its natural habitat? Every experience reminds us how fascinating our world is! In places like Sea Pines on Hilton Head Island, nature takes center stage. So, you can expect to find yourself in the middle of a living, breathing wildlife sanctuary.
Meet some of the amazing creatures you might spot during your stay.
Alligators
Sea Pines is a natural home for the American alligator, one of the Lowcountry’s most famous reptilian residents. Alligators are an ancient part of the ecosystem here, and it’s safest to assume that every pond, lagoon, or marsh has one.
Birds
Hilton Head has protected wetlands, welcoming a variety of feathered friends year-round. Watch ospreys, bald eagles, sandpipers, pelicans, or egrets do their thing! Perhaps the most iconic sight is the Great Blue Heron. Consider your vacation complete if you see one.
Coyotes
Coyotes roam in Sea Pines, too, especially within the Forest Preserve. These clever canines are most often spotted (or heard) during their mating season from January to March. They’re generally shy around humans, though…
Deer
The white-tailed deer is a graceful and gentle presence on the island. They’re most active at dawn and dusk! Late May and early June mark the peak season for fawns; you may spot a tiny deer tucked away in tall grass.
If you do, know that the mother is likely nearby. She’s just keeping her distance to avoid attracting predators.
Dolphins
Around 170 bottlenose dolphins live in the Hilton Head area. Unlike coyotes, they’re not shy at all! They swim close to boats and even give curious looks.
Dolphins are intelligent and social, living in pods of up to a dozen members. Fun fact? Each has its unique whistle.
Horses
Head to Lawton Stables for a guided horseback trail ride through the Sea Pines Forest Preserve. It’s a peaceful way to explore and maybe spot other animals along the way. Rest assured, every horse is living their best life, thanks to the caretakers.
Jellyfish
During August and September, sea nettle jellyfish play along the South Carolina coast. With saucer-shaped brown or red bells and long trailing tentacles, they’re a striking sight! But the stings can be moderate to severe. Swim cautiously…
Sea Turtles
Endangered loggerhead turtles return to Hilton Head each year to nest, making them one of the island’s most treasured visitors. During nesting and hatching season from May through October, we turn off beachfront lights at night, and hatchlings use the moonlight to find the ocean.
All About Wildlife Safety
Remember, Sea Pines is the above animals’ home first and ours second. We must keep each other safe! Here are tips for everyone:
- Admire wildlife from a distance.
- Never feed the wild creatures.
- Leash your pets.
- Check swimming pools before jumping in.
- Use a flashlight at night.
- Clean your yard.
- Don’t try to trap an animal yourself.
